Jimi Hendrix SUCKS!!! The Beatles are no more talented than Justin Bieber. These are bold statements that can anger the general public. We revere a select group of musicians. When a person expresses disdain for any formidable recording artists, they will get a verbal lashing from their peers. But are we allowed to second guess our reflexive appreciation for talented individuals? Overpopularization of an song, artist, or band can certainly lead to knee jerk dislike. When I was in college, a dorm neighbor incessantly played "Gonna' Make You Sweat" - I hated the music because he loved it (see link below).
I had no reason to dislike the music. It's got a great beat, the vocalist is insanely talented, the rap mixes newly invented double time feel with classic Sugarhill Gang style flow..... but it wasn't time tested and approved as a true classic. Even with time tested musicians, if they are "over-liked", they can be subject to overcriticism. I remember a select group of people HATING the Grateful Dead. In truth, they didn't know much about the band, but they hated the smelly hippies that seemed hypnotized and brainwashed by the music. In an alternate context, It's easy to dislike techno-hipster-ravers with their day-glo outfits and pacifier necklaces, but if you actually sat down and listened to some Fat Boy Slim, you'll hear beats that are easy to relate to, and sometimes directly relate to the Led Zeppelin tracks that many people so highly regard. Well the article below puts it all into perspective for us. Here we have a clear explanation as to why Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Carlos Santatna, Eric Clapton, Metallica, The Rolling Stones etc. SUCK!!!
