What does the Arab Spring, Heavy D, and the Grateful Dead have in common? Not much, but the theme for this mix is rebellion and reggae cover songs written by hippie bands:) I had to throw in a little bit of party music, just to lighten the load, but for some odd reason, the more serious tracks remind me of a rap outfit from the 1990's who mixed a Jew with an Arab to make some hardcore rhymes (click image above).

Example of Pro-DJ Mix
In the modern day of pirated software, I found it difficult to ignore a recent offer to download a cracked version VirtualDJ and try to get a better understanding of the turntables. The only prior experience I’ve had with the tactics of DJ’ing came from the DJ Hero video game, which means my experience was limited.
Most musicians specialize in playing a particular instrument, yet they maintain an interest in learning the basics of instruments other than their focus of study. I am primarily a guitar player, but I have studied the bass, saxophone, piano, drums, and the art of recording. The one “instrument” that is often overlooked by members of the musical community is the turntables.
Before I began working with my mixes, I had to pick a style of music to use for the foundation of my arrangements. DJ’s work with a variety of musical styles, ranging from vinyl beat tracks to dubbed reggae. Popular categories for mixed samples might include Electronica, Hip-Hop, Reggae, Pop, or Funk. In my studies, I downloaded examples created by professional DJ’s, and I noticed they didn’t seem to find a way to add Punk Rock, Blues, Classic Rock, or Country into their mixes.

I decided to try to include Punk Rock, Blues, Classic Rock, and Country into my DJ tracks. I realized why most DJ’s don’t track these styles of mixes…. Because it would take extra-ordinary talent to be able to do that!! Electronica, Hip-Hop, Reggae, Pop, and Funk have a tendency to come from a musical script that is indicative of DJ’d music. I am convinced that it is easier to create mixes if you take advantage of these styles of music, so the average DJ is simplifying their job. I admit that I might have over-challenged myself by attempting to create mixes using musical styles such as Punk Rock, Blues, Classic Rock, and Country. I resorted to “backspin”, default samples, and “flange” effects to disguise my weaknesses. My mixes are raw and rough with occasional abrupt changes, but I challenge a more talented artist to see what they can do with the styles of music at hand.
